Illustrator, Calligraphy Pen and the Computer
![]() |
Adobe Illustrator is one computer program that you can that allows you to create calligraphy. It has a special feature that allows you to compose calligraphy that looks exactly like you were using an ink pen.
One on the many cool features of the illustrator is the vector filters. These include the Ink Pen filter, Adding arrowheads, Path Patterns, and Photoshop-compatibility. The ink pen filter allows you to fill objects with a crosshatching effect or a complex stippling. In order to use this feature in Illustrator you first select the object, choose Filter-Ink-Pen-Effects, you will then see a dialog box that will let you see exactly what your calligraphy will look like. You need to be aware that when you use this feature, you may not be able to print your calligraphy after you have finished since it has a tendency to use quite a large amount of ink when printing.
You will also find the Ink Pen Hatches feature. In order to use this you need to select Hatches for the Ink Pen submenu. A dialog box will open up and you can select where you would like to import or export your hatches from.
At anytime that you need to find out how to use any features in Illustrator you can always refer to the manual that came with the program our use the help feature.
You can also use the Stylize Filters group; this feature allows you to add interesting and unique effects as accents to your calligraphy. It has features such as Path Patterns, Add Arrowheads, and Round Corners. All of these features are shortcuts that allow you to save time when you’re creating your calligraphy.
The Add Arrowheads is an easy feature to use. You just draw a line and select the Add Arrowheads filter. Illustrator offers a selection of 27 different styles of arrows to choose from. You can add these to the end, the beginning or both ends.
Try the Calligraphy filter. This option allows you to draw calligraphy in the traditional way. Your pieces of art will look like they were drawn with the end of a flat-edged nib calligraphy pen. This stroke will be converted to a filled path when you run the filter.
Path Pattern filter allows you to create virtually any type of border for your calligraphy that you would like.
Round Corners filters feature is exactly what is says. This feature allows you to apply round corners to any of your artwork. This feature is really great because it applies round corners to any type of shape, making it a real time saver.
You will find that if you purchase Illustrator is should come with many Photoshop-compatible filters. These filters are compatible to use on any raster image. If you can’t find the information you need from your Illustrator manual and you would like to learn more about working with calligraphy in Illustrator, you might want to check out many of the online websites that offer classes and free tutorials on how to learn calligraphy.
