Calligraphy Pen: Selecting the Right One
![]() |
Choosing a calligraphy pen can be a bit overwhelming and confusing, especially if you’re new to calligraphy. The come in a variety of shapes, sizes, weights, styles, and prices.
The best way to figure out what type of calligraphy pen is right for you is simply to give it a try. Check out your local arts and crafts stores to see what type of selection they have and give them a try. Most of your local art stores are more than willing to let you try out the different calligraphy pens before you buy them. Another way to try out calligraphy pens is to sign up for a calligraphy class at your local art store. There are some shops that specialize in the sale of pens, but they are very limited and often are hard to find.
When selecting a calligraphy pen that is right for you make sure that the pen fits comfortably in your hand; you should be able to hold the pen without straining or holding your hand at an angle that is not natural.
When you’re trying out pens there are things that you should look for. First you need to look for the Nib Width. There are different size widths of nibs for different types of calligraphy. If you are using larger calligraphy, you will want to use a wider nib width, while the thinner sized nib is used for detail work. You also have a choice of different shaped nibs. Nibs come in a variety of shapes, ranging from wide, rounded, or chiseled points. Try starting out with a chisel that is pointed, it is the easiest to use and won’t tear or scratch your paper as much when you are first learning. You also need to decide on the type of flexibility that you would like in your pen. Since the calligraphy pens are made out of different types of materials, some of the pens are more flexible than others. The more flexible the pen is the harder it can be to control. So if you are just learning calligraphy, you might want to select a pen that’s more on the stiffer side. Calligraphy pens come in a wide variety of shapes, colors, thickness, and sizes, so it is merely a choice of your own personal preference as to what type of pen you would like to use.
There are many different types of calligraphy pens and manufacturers to go along with it, so be sure to shop around before purchasing you first pen. You will also find that they have calligraphy starter kits that you can purchase if you are a beginner. These kits usually include a couple of pens, nibs, ink in various colors, and a book of instruction. The kits can seem to be a bit overpriced, but when you look at buying everything individually, you will see that you actually are saving and it’s a great way to get everything you need to get started.
