Old English Calligraphy: A Style that is not Forgotten

Many people think of calligraphy as a form of fancy writing, but in fact it is really a type of drawing. Each letter that a calligrapher draws is done with patience and perfection, the letters reflecting the different styles of calligraphy that are available.

The definition of calligraphy is beautiful writing derived from the Greek. Calligraphy was written using a plume quill that was dipped in ink, which was a replacement for reed pens. While many people still use the plume today to write calligraphy some people would rather use a calligraphy pen that uses ink cartridges, a more modern and convenient method.

There are many different styles of calligraphy and if you’re familiar with the computer you might have seen some of these styles in Microsoft Word. Some of the most popular calligraphy styles include, Old English, also referred to as Black-Letter or Gothic, Arabic, Chinese, also referred to as oriental style, and the ever most popular Western or Roman styles.

You will see calligraphy used in many different fashions, from the simplest form of writing in documents or letters, to the exquisite works of art. Artists have used calligraphy in their works of art for years as a way to express and also to communicate.

The first forms of calligraphy as a system of writing was the Latin style, Greek, and Cyrillic, which is known as Western Calligraphy. This was developed somewhere around 3000 B.C. At that time heavy rolls of papyrus where used to write on which were later replaced with parchment paper that the Romans used to make books out of.

The popularity of calligraphy continued with the many different copies of the Bible. In Scotland and Ireland the monks used calligraphy known as the Uncial, often referred to as the Insular style. After the invention of the printing press the use of calligraphy was not as popular. But thanks to artists and their love of calligraphy the art was not all together lost. During the 15th Century a style of calligraphy called Copperplate was invented by using a pointed nib instead of a flat nib which resembled the etchings of copper that had been engraved.

Today calligraphy is more a form of decent penmanship that draws attention and has a unique character all of its own. This type of calligraphy is called Modern or New York style which was created by the calligrapher, Anne Robin of New York.

Calligraphy today is often copied from the traditional style of years ago by printers that make all types of invitations for any and all occasions. If you don’t mind printed invitations, this is the way to go if you’re on a budget. Professional calligrapher will customize your invitations for fees starting at $2.00 an invitation up to $10.00 and invitation for the more experienced calligrapher. While customized invitations are very beautiful, it doesn’t take long to rack up a large bill.

No matter what type of calligraphy you decide to use, either made by yourself or by someone else, you can’t go wrong, calligraphy is truly a beautiful piece of artwork.
